Wisdom at Work
August 2007

Habits and patterns are hard to break because when we consciously or subconsciously repeat an action, that action becomes more and more significant to our lives.

RepetitionI walk every morning. It isn't a big thing, but it's an expression of a commitment that I made to myself to keep fit and healthy.

I'll walk on a road, a trail, a beach, a treadmill. It doesn't matter. What matters is that I repeat a simple ritual to renew my body, mind and spirit; and I do it everyday.

What's feeding you everyday? Look at the little things you do that impact your health, your work and your relationships.

Are they supporting who you want to be and what you believe in or are they working against you?

The little things add up. I'm going to harness the power of repetition here. The little things add up. So make them count.

You know my philosophy, "If you feel it, say it!"

Let Me Ask You This

Each month I'll share a question that made me stop and think. You might want to pause for a moment on this too, or write it on a white board and share it with your staff.

What one change could you make to your lifestyle that would give you more peace?
Can you do it today?

MANAGE YOUR PEOPLE: Always Be Hiring

Leaders who are always looking for the next star on their team demonstrate one of the best people management strategies I know.

It's a MindsetHiring mistakes happen when you are desperate, so don't wait for someone to leave to think about hiring.

Every day you meet people, so every day you have opportunities to source the talent and personality you need to improve your team.

You're just looking. No harm. No foul.

Where To Find Your Next Star

  • Get to know other people in your organization. The company has already invested in them. Maybe their talents and passions would really ignite as part of your team.

  • People who send unsolicited resumes or call out of the blue, are demonstrating initiative. Make the time to at least have a phone conversation with them.

  • If you are in a restaurant or retail store and someone strikes you as "getting it", give them your business card.

Star Struck

When you meet a potential star, don't offer them a job, offer them a coffee or suggest that they come by for a tour.

There's no pressure and no expectations, because you aren't officially hiring. It's the perfect time to get to know someone and see how they might fit on your team.

We all know there is a serious shortage of good people. To lead a great team you have to be proactive. Be on the lookout and have a shortlist of potential superstars in your drawer.

FYI: You can't expect HR to pull a rabbit out of a hat. As a manager, it is your job to identify the gaps on your team. HR can help you manage the process, but if you are leaving it up to them to source your candidates you are giving up too much.

Manage Your Energy: Drink Water

waterWater has a massive impact on performance.

Professional athletes hydrate before, during and after a game to keep their bodies and minds  performing at peak.

Business people need to do the same. Our physical, mental and emotional energy levels improve when we are adequately hydrated.

But I'm not thirsty...
Research shows that as we age, we become less sensitive to the signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth and reduced concentration. From age 20 onwards, our early warning system starts to breakdown and we actually go longer and longer without noticing thirst.

Stay ahead of the thirst.
If you wait until you feel thirsty, you are letting your body go through the first stages of dehydration. This will adversely affect your energy and your performance.

Aim to drink at least 8 ounces of water every hour of the day. And don’t forget to add an extra glass for every caffeinated or alcoholic beverage you consume.

Why Water?
There's nothing like it on earth (or beyond). It keeps our blood flowing. It regulates our PH. It supports our nervous system, brain functioning, skin elasticity...it is basically our be all and end all.

Don't hesitate. Hydrate!
